Overview & Benefits

Designed to promote global understanding of Chinese civilization, the Confucius China Studies Program funds research and academic study across Chinese Language, History, Philosophy, Literature, and Culture. It is open to all academic levels — undergraduate, master's, and doctoral — making it one of the most inclusive scholarship programs available through Chinese institutions. Whether you are a student from Casablanca, Nairobi, Paris, Cairo, or Jakarta, this program creates a direct academic bridge to China's leading universities.

The program is administered in collaboration with China's Ministry of Education. You can review official scholarship guidelines on moe.gov.cn and verify institutional placements through csc.edu.cn. Students admitted through this track gain not only financial support but also immersion in one of the world's richest intellectual traditions.

Eligibility & Requirements

To qualify for the Confucius China Studies Program, applicants must hold non-Chinese citizenship and demonstrate a clear academic focus on Chinese studies. Applicants pursuing the Chinese language track are required to provide valid HSK scores, while other humanities tracks may have adjusted language requirements. Importantly, IELTS is not required, removing a major barrier for students from Africa, the Middle East, and developing regions.

Candidates should have a strong academic record and a well-defined research proposal or study plan related to Chinese humanities. Age and health requirements follow standard Chinese government scholarship criteria. Visit our Scholarship Guide for a full eligibility checklist before applying.

Coverage & Funding Details

This is a fully funded scholarship with comprehensive financial support. Recipients benefit from full tuition coverage, free university accommodation, a monthly living stipend, and dedicated research funding — an exceptional package that removes financial stress throughout your studies. There are no hidden costs for covered students, making it highly competitive among opportunities listed on our PhD in China and Master's Degree China pages.

The research funding component is particularly valuable for doctoral and postdoctoral scholars conducting field studies or archival research within China's academic institutions. Use our Cost Calculator to compare this funding against typical living expenses in major Chinese cities.

Application Process & Deadline

The application deadline for the Confucius China Studies Program is January 31. Applicants must submit documents including academic transcripts, a research proposal, letters of recommendation, a valid passport copy, and HSK certificates where applicable. Applications are submitted through the official Campus China portal or directly through a local Confucius Institute branch.

Early preparation is critical. We recommend starting your application at least 8 weeks before the deadline. Explore our China Student Visa guide to plan your arrival once admitted, and browse Chinese Universities to identify your preferred host institution.
