X1 vs X2 — which do you need?
X1 Visa
Long-term study (>180 days)
For degree students (Bachelor, Master, PhD) and long-term language programs. Requires Admission Notice + JW201/JW202 form. Convert to a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival.
X2 Visa
Short-term study (≤180 days)
For short Chinese language courses, summer camps and exchange terms. Requires only the Admission Notice. No residence permit conversion needed.
Step-by-step visa process
Get Admission Notice
Receive your admission letter and JW201/JW202 form from your university.
Medical check (home country)
Complete the Foreigner Physical Examination Form at a public hospital. X1 students must bring this; X2 students usually do it after arrival.
Apply at embassy/consulate
Submit passport, admission notice, JW form, photo, medical form and visa fee. Processing: 4 working days to 4 weeks.
Arrive & register
Enter China, register at your university and local police station within 24 hours.
Convert to Residence Permit
X1 holders apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days at the local Entry-Exit Bureau. Valid up to 5 years.
Foreigner Physical Examination
Required for X1 visa applicants. The form is provided by the university or Chinese embassy. Complete it at a public/government hospital in your home country, stamped with an official seal.
Most universities also re-do the medical in China during registration; keep both copies.
