Compare Chinese language programs by entry level, class placement, contact hours, assessment, duration, fees and study-document support. Studying Mandarin does not automatically guarantee an HSK result, degree admission or a particular visa.
Choose a Mandarin program by level, teaching hours, assessment, accommodation and future study goals, without relying on guaranteed fluency claims.
A language course can support everyday communication, academic preparation or a longer-term interest in Mandarin. Choose it for a clear purpose rather than a promise that one year abroad produces a fixed level of fluency.
Courses differ in entry rules, intensity, class placement and the documents they support. Before comparing cities or tuition, decide what you want the course to help you do.
Define your main learning goal
A beginner planning a short stay may need a different course from a student preparing for a Chinese-taught degree. Identify whether your priority is conversation, reading, academic writing, a language test or subject-specific communication.
Check the requirements of any later degree separately. Reaching a language-test score does not by itself satisfy academic admission, and a course-completion certificate is not necessarily the same as an accepted language qualification.
Check entry and placement rules
Confirm whether the course accepts your current Chinese level and educational background. Ask how students are placed into classes and whether a level can change after assessment.
Peking University's published semester-long Chinese language program information, for example, states no Chinese proficiency prerequisite for that program. That does not remove its other admission conditions or establish the rules for every PKU language course.
If you are already studying Mandarin, prepare an accurate description of your level. A mismatch between your starting point and the class can make an otherwise attractive course unsuitable.
Compare the actual learning experience
Ask for the current course outline and timetable. Look at the balance of listening, speaking, reading and writing rather than relying only on the total advertised contact hours.
Useful comparison questions include:
- How are classes grouped by level?
- What assessment or feedback is provided?
- Is test preparation part of the course or a separate option?
- Which activities are included and which carry an additional charge?
- What certificate or transcript is issued after completion?
Treat these as questions to investigate, not claims that every university provides the same facilities or class format.
Understand costs before choosing a city
Use the fee schedule for the exact course length and intake. Separate tuition from accommodation, insurance, deposits, books and activities. Confirm whether housing is available, how it is allocated and what is included.
An affordable-looking tuition figure may cover only part of a year or exclude important costs. Compare the same study period across options. Do not assume a scholarship exists simply because a university offers a language course.
If funding is essential, check the named award's eligible course, entry conditions, coverage and current application dates.
Check study documents and stay arrangements
Ask what documentation is available for the exact course and duration. Admission to a language program does not itself grant permission to enter or stay in China.
XJTLU's published study-document guidance distinguishes its longer programs from one-semester non-degree language study and explains the documents used for those categories. This is an institutional example; confirm the requirements applicable to your host and the visa authority handling your application.
Do not rely on a degree-program checklist for a short language stay. Use the visa guide as an introduction, then verify your own circumstances.
Make progress measurable without promises
Choose realistic learning activities and a way to review progress. Regular speaking practice, reading and revision can complement lessons, but no universal schedule guarantees a particular test result or fluency level.
If you hope to progress into a degree, obtain the destination program's current language and academic conditions. Keep that decision separate from simply booking a language course.
Discuss suitable options
Ask about Chinese language study on WhatsApp. Share your current level, intended duration, purpose and budget range. Confirm any assistance fees before proceeding. Do not send identity documents until an appropriate process is agreed.
