Chinese university application documents depend on the degree, department and intake. Start with the current program notice, then check identity documents, qualifications, transcripts, language evidence and any required supporting materials.
Prepare a program-specific application file, check translation and language evidence, and avoid treating a generic checklist as an official requirement.
A complete application file begins with the requirements for your exact program, not a universal checklist. Different departments can ask for different evidence even within the same university. Use this guide to organize your file, then check every item against the current admissions notice.
Missing paperwork can delay an assessment, but a complete file does not guarantee admission or funding. Academic suitability, available places and the institution's selection process still matter.
Build a requirements tracker first
Create one checklist for each university and program. Record the intake year, deadline, document name, accepted language, file format and whether an original, certified copy or online reference is required. Save the official notice alongside your notes so you can identify where each requirement came from.
Keep university admission and scholarship requirements separate. A document accepted for admission may not satisfy a funding scheme, and the two processes may have different deadlines.
Identity and academic evidence
Check the instructions for these categories:
- Identity: the required passport pages and any additional nationality-status evidence relevant to your circumstances.
- Qualifications: the diploma or degree certificate appropriate to your chosen level.
- Academic record: transcripts, and an explanation of the grading scale if requested.
- Current students: evidence of expected graduation, where provisional applications are permitted.
- Photograph: the exact size, background and file specifications in the instructions.
Do not assume that one passport-validity period or photo size applies everywhere. Make sure the name and date of birth on your documents match. If documents use different names, find out what supporting explanation is needed.
Language proof, translations and authentication
Confirm the teaching language of the actual program. Then check which language tests, score levels, validity periods or exemption evidence it accepts. A medium-of-instruction letter is useful only when the program specifically permits it.
Translations and degree authentication are separate requirements. For example, Tsinghua's graduate admissions guidance describes Chinese or English application materials, with notarial translations where required, and qualification-authentication requirements. This is a university example, not a rule for every Chinese institution.
Keep the original-language document with its translation. Do not change a grade, degree name or course title to make an application appear stronger.
Supporting materials that depend on the program
Research degrees may require a proposal, academic references or evidence of research experience. Professional programs may ask for employment evidence. Art and design courses may require a portfolio. Health or background documents should follow the institution's instructions, including any validity period.
A supervisor's interest is not the same as formal admission. If an acceptance form is required, check who may issue it and whether a particular format is mandatory.
Use the study-plan guide to prepare your academic statement rather than copying a generic essay.
Check the file before an application review
Open every scan and confirm that all pages are readable. Keep file names clear and consistent. Follow the stated size and format limits instead of applying an arbitrary rule such as one megabyte per file.
Check referee arrangements early: some institutions collect recommendations from referees rather than from the applicant. Keep copies of the final materials and any acknowledgement or request for clarification.
For the wider sequence, read the application planning timeline.
Get help identifying the next step
Discuss your application checklist on WhatsApp. Share your intended degree, subject and intake first. Do not send passport scans or sensitive records before agreeing on an appropriate process. Ask for the scope and any fees for additional assistance before committing.
